As with Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy is based on the understanding that emotions are key to identity and a guide for individual choice and decision making. The goal of Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy is, thus, to develop emotional awareness, particularly of difficult emotions, as avoidant strategies can be harmful and even destructive.  By increasing emotional awareness, people are better able to exercise cognitive flexibility, emotional regulation and make choices that lead to a more healthy, meaningful life.
